1 hour from Grand Isle, 30 mins to Houma, 40 Mins to NoLa. Depends what you want. Thibodeaux is another option to consider.
I live in Houston and have a Grand Isle camp on the water in Queen Bess Bay. When I make the 6 hour drive from Houston to GI, I normally stay for 10 days to 2 weeks...

Good luck with that!! That is a good area though. I can be in Downtown NOLA in an hour. Kenner/Metarie 40 minutes. Houma 20, Thibodaux 15
Great Freshwater fishing, Lake Cataouchie 35 minutes, Lake Des Allemands 15 minutes, Lake Bouef 10, lake Long 15 minutes, Saltwater you have Grand Isle 1 1/2 hours, Dularge 45 minutes. It's a nice central. They also have some good DRs in the area that are part of the largest hospital system in South LA so you have good care with that too.
Honestly if you don't need/want a lot of land Lockport/Raceland/Matthews is good area. Still has a small town feel but we have everything we need here. Wal-mart, local grocery stores, a farmers market every Saturday. Local meat markets, a really good ag store.
