I find if you get a big bulk bag of rye grass seed it sprouts quickly to start a root base that holds water and the regular grass fills in quicker to kill it off.

its not something you can do in the middle of summer but any other time I find it shortens in half the time grass takes to fill in the blank spots.

when I did my yard which was 90% bare after re-landscaping, I covered with rye grass seed and then 2 weeks after that sprouted I went over it and seeded the regular grass and I had grass covering everything and the rye grass dies off as the regular grass covers it.

I find using the cheap rye grass seed to prep the dead spots with a root base first is the best solution short of re-sodding it
