I bought my grandson a rod from cabela's , 8'6in. 6wt.....he lives in kansas and only fishes the summer with me and in 6 or 8 trips fish'n he's a master with popping bugs. It was somewhere around 80.00 bucks or so. a 6 or 7 weight is good for any freshwater here as for my opinion. when you pick up a wal mart special and a 80 or so rod from bass pro or cabelas you'll see the difference esp. in weight n balance. the only thing for me about the reel is to store line on so cheaper the better. i use a good weight forward floating #7 line which is good for bass or perch poppers. As far as leaders and such good ole 14 pound stren 8 ft. is all i use. as for poppers i tie my own and thats another sport in itself but i find useing #8 or 10 bugs i can catch bass and bream.....
