I talked to a few other people and their salesman asked them the same question about running it hard. Is that the same as telling me I shouldn't run my outboard motor wide open? Has anyone else had a problem with these motors? I did return it to Academy with no questions asked and got a new one. Hoping this was just a lemon.

probably a bad batch of motors, the fact they are asking the same question to others is a sign they are having a lot of problems with it.
if I were you i would try to repeat the same conditions again a few more times to be sure this motor works correctly but if you have the same issue again with the new motor switch to a different size or type that doesn't use the same components as that one or if that isn't an option then just try a motorguide instead
