It sounds like you have a bad battery. You may want to take the battery to an auto parts store where they can put a resistance/load on it to see what it does. However this is probably a waste of time since you notice an odor and its not charging. Time for a new battery im sure. It would be good to test the voltage at the battery terminals if it is convenient but you already said you could tell it was low on charger so I don't think its necessary.
