No reason you can't bass fish from a bay boat. I have taken my 22' Ranger to the spillway to bring some large items to the houseboat, and fished out of it. The main reason the bass boat is better for it's intended purpose is maneuverability, the speed is secondary but nice.

That being said, if I only could have one boat it would be a bay boat with a foot control trolling motor. I will never put my bass boat in the saltwater, I do fish out of Venice in the bass boat but don't go far enough south to worry about the salt.
