the "GM" stands for glass matt and its like a solid sponge so liquid isn't free to slosh around

its the same basic idea as gel batteries so it doesn't leak or have "free flowing" liquid in it. in short its packed solid with fiber material so it only needs like 25% of the acid used in regular batteries because the matt takes up all that space and keeping the lead "wet" and not exposed to the air is the key.
