When I get live crabs from my seafood guy he always throws the dead ones in a seperate crate to throw in the dumpster later. I would get with whoever you buying live crabs from and see if they have dead crabs and if you can buy them at reduced rate.

Why don't you break the claws off of live crabs and hook them through the back swimming fin? I have a buddy that wins numerous tournaments for bull drum and bull reds, he fastens his crabs to the hook with a rubber band.
