Captain Gannard, I experienced the same dilemma a couple of years ago. I thought 8 foot would be enough being that I had limited clearance in my garage for my boat. I owned the 8 footer for 1 day before upgrading to the 10 footer. I went out with the 8 footer and it wasn't holding me on a reef in Big Lake that I was sure it would hold on. I immediately upgraded. Since switching, I've been extremely satisfied with the 10 footer. It does everything I need it to do in Big Lake. I just lower it when I back my boat into my garage. I recommend the 10 footer if you can find a way to fit it in your boat shed.
I have measurable experience with both the 8 and 10 foot Power Poles. An 8 footer holds very well in 6-7 feet of water, whereas the 10 footer will hold strong in 8-9 feet of water. I've found that the 10 footer has noticeably more holding power over the 8 footer when the water is choppy.
