most down image and side image graphs wont read while on plane without a thru hull transducer hooked up with a Y cable. I wouldn't let it hang below the bottom of the boat. I have the exact same unit as you and I have mine mounted to the bottom of my jack plate on a transducer shield and saver. mine doesn't read while on plane either but im fine with it. I want to say the thru hull transducer and Y cable was around $150 to add on.
