Steel for knife project

Looking for an old saw blade, file, or other steel for a homemade knife project.
Any info on where to find these, or advice on other ideas would be appreciated.

My dirt work guy just gave me a custom made knife , the steel is Damascus steel , buffalo horn and rosewood handle . I can ask if he can get u a knife blank

Not fancy but worked good......I used some old files to make some Lathes tools.

Plenty of old used tools at pawn shops for cheap.

Are you going to remove the temper and then anneal the steel after you are done? Or just try to work it without softening it? I have stack of old table saw and circular saw blades but the steel isn't that great in some of them. They will make a decent knife but nothing real high end.

That's cool this is just a first try so I was going to start with a saw blade or something solid already so don't need a forge

Hacksaw blades it what my grandaddy always used and still use them in the kitchen to this day

Saw blades are pretty thin. What about the blades off and old manual hedge trimmer?

Go to the hardware store and buy the biggest nastiest Old Hickory knive. Take it apart and re do the blade into the shape that you want it and make a new handle for it.

I have seen some you tube videos where people make nice carving knives and from circular saw blades. That may be worth a shot.

these are great for solid thick blade rigid knife, but if you want a flexible knife then use a saw blade. a old hand saw is great for a knife blade if you want it very flexible like a fillet knife but if you want something that is semi-rigid but still has "some" flex to it, then use an old circular saw blade

Lawnmower blades work good. Just go to any mower shop and ask for old used blades. Should get some for free or cheap.

I know you can buy em brand new for $10 on ebay so used ones cant have any value to anyone I would think

If you know someone that does concrete saw cutting, the blades they use are great for knives
