Venice Report
Made it down to Venice around noon on Friday. Set up camp and the birds were literally everywhere. Thousands of wigeon, grays and pintail with a few mallards mixed in. We broke up into a group of 2 and a group of 3 and had 30 that afternoon. The following morning was just as good for my blind. The two of us had 12 birds consisting of 3 mallards, 2 pintail, 3 widgeon and 4 grays. The other group killed 14 on the morning hunt and went back later to finish off their limit. Sunday was a different story, birds didn't fly, although we did leave the blind at 7:15 to break camp and head home. My blind had 2 grays and a teal the other blind scratched. Totals for the trip: Mallards 3 Pintail 10 Widgeon 18 Teal 16 Gadwall 15 Shovelers 1 |

It was a blast, but I will not return without a dog. On top of these birds we lost many to the otters. I'm convinced they're conditioned to come to the sound of gunfire. In the muck we had no chance to get to the birds before them.
We usually make one trip a year, but I'm seriously thinking about returning before the end of the season. It was just too fun. Just about all of our ducks came in without blowing on a call. |
