I have had both of them. I like the motorguide in the open water and minkota in the marsh.

Last year I was looking to either fix my trollmotor or get a new one.
Three trollmotor shops I went to said the new motorguides were not the same as the one I had.
New minn kota's have the composite shafts which broke easier.
I gave up and just had mine repaired due to I like the stainless shaft over composite shaft.
