Default Merc 40?

99 Merc 40, good compression and runs about 38 mph on 18' tunnel.
What kind of dollars and how much faster with upgrades? I do not want to do anything that will shorten life span of motor, can it be done and will the cost/benefit be worth it?

Got a 2000 model. I don't know how fast you wanna run but, mine does 32-35 in chop with two men, a dog and, 4 dozen decoys. That's GPS speed. Great motor!

That just depends on how far you want to go with the motor. Your biggest drag is the tunnel, they are geat for what they are designed for, speed ain't it. As for the motor, start with a reed plate modification and see what you gain. If you still want more, you are then ready for a set of 60 carbs. It would be useless to do the carbs before the reed plate. You must understand that your gains on a tunnel will not be as drastic as the same mods on a non-tunnel boat.

I've been rolling it around on whether or not to sell mine. Only thing is, if I do, it comes with a boat and trailer too!

I have a 2001 on a 20x48 bateau. Boycen reeds and 60 carbs. It runs 44 with just me and ice chest of beer.
If i have another person and fishing load it will run a steady 38.
Best thing about that motor is it does not need water to cool it mud works just fine.

What kind of $$ vs increase in speed for reed modification? Is it realistic to believe I can get over 40 mph out of a tunnel?

You got any interest in trading out your tunnel for a flat bottom?

If you do the mods, you will have more HP, but possibly the same top end RPM.
So you will get to top end faster, but it will prolly be same top speed.
May have to get more pitch in prop or a new prop to go faster at same RPM.
That is, if you are reaching top RPM with the prop you have now.

The reeds will run you about $90
and you should be able to find the carbs used for about 175
Had a buddy of mine tear everything apart so I did not have anything in labor.

Getting Danny to do the reed plate would be your best bang for the buck. I don't think it's that expensive and it does way more than putting boysen reeds on the motor.

Here's some info on the reed plate mod:

Raymond, I would listen to what Cajunchristian says. He has worked on my motor and I trust his opinions. He has worked on motors for a long time. Can't go wrong talking to him.
