Tried to get some guys together for a last minute trip to Big Lake yesterday but all my friends have real jobs or other commitments. Had to go at it solo. Figured it was an opprotunity I just couldn't pass up with a lull in all the bad weather. The front coming down with a prediction of SNOW!!! Couldn't help but think the fish would be gorging themselves before this hits and I was right. Got out to the lake around 12:30 PM and could barely launch the big G3 out of Hebert's because the water was so low. Looked like choclate syrup until I got out to the middle of the lake. Wind went flat as did the tide and it was about 1 1/2 hours before the bite turned on. Birds worked sluggish and the tide started to come in then all hell broke lose. 15 trout was over within a matter of 30 minutes. It was absolutley crazy!
Started trying to catch a couple of reds for lagniappe but the trout just kept destroying everything I threw out there. Must have tossed another 20 - 25 trout back before a 9 lb. red decided I would get what I asked for. Put him in the boat without the net...hell, I couldn't even reach for the net! That Russian sub was pulling the boat! Ended the day with a limit of school trout and the Russian's lost another sub and I was able to snap off a picture of the sunset that is the calm before the storm. I do love this lake!
