Dryer help

I just moved into a new house and the outlet for the dryer is a 3 prong but the cord is a 4 prong. I went bought a 3 prong cord but there is no ground wire to hook to the dryer. Do I need the ground wire or do I simply change cords and leave the ground off? Thanks fellas

your ground and common serve the same purpose. just extra assurance to have the ground. so to answer your question you can leave it off. the 4 prong is a little more safer because it is hooked directly to a ground rod.......

Thanks Adam. The three cords aren't colored so I guess I just put them on lined up like they are.,

220 has 2 hots and a ground(common). usaully your two hots are a red and and black. white is common. but i just looked at mine and there is no color so i would assume the 2 bigger wires (if yours is like mine) are the hots. did the cord come with some directions?

Didn't open it once I saw that It didn't have a ground. Gonna check it out tonight

if you have an ohm meter you can ohm the wires out to make sure they are the right ones

if you are changing to the four prong chord; your supposed to seperate the ground and neutral, your old dryer had a copper jumper from the middle screw to the frame of the dryer, to seperate remove that jumper and use the middle screw for the neutral and the screw in the frame for the ground.but as long as u have the two hots right it wont hurt anything
