Default 6/9/11 Big Lake topwater Reds

Reds BL 6-9-10.jpg

Went for big trout on top, but my spot was too dirty. Caught a couple of trout there, but not much action. Then I made a move to get out of the wind and found a school of 20" Reds. Slicks started popping up so I jammed my stick it anchor pin in the mud and commenced to working them over on top. They kept slapping at my Spook so I changed to the higher pitch she dog and they got pissed. Caught my limit and another 10 then had to get back to the house for a dang conference call. Left them biting, but it sure was fun.

Your right, whatever the factory size is that is what I replace it with. I usually just look at the sizes in the store and grab the size I need. #4 maybe?

I'm just conparing it to the size of hooks standard on a Bomber. A #6 would be like a crankbait hook. Most topwater baits I've seen have #2 trebles. A tip would be to use double splitrings. This will allow the hooks to hang farther from the bait and might eliminate some missed strikes. Might not work on a Mirrolure, tho, because they're usually shorter than a Spook making the hooks closer together.

I was wrong....just looked at the last pack I bought, they are #2....Good idea with the double split rings, might have to give that a shot.

You were "mistaken". We don't say that "W" word here.

It will also allow the hooks to work farther away from the bait while walkin' it. Just gotta be careful that the center and rear hooks on a Spook don't touch. You can even remove that center hook without givin' up anything. Make sure that the splits are as good quality as the factory ones....stainless steel and heavy duty.

Yesterday I was using a spook that I just bought and the center and rear hooks often caught on each other and I had to unhook them before making the next cast.
