Default I need a fishing instructor!

I'm newbie trying to learn the ropes of fishing specks and reds. Never fished before but very interested now cause my 6 year old son is fanatical about it. This kid can fish all day, not catch a thing, and never complain.

Launches in Delcambre, Don's in Boston and Hebert's south of Erath are very convenient for us, about 15 miles from our house in Youngsville. Been to Don's once and launched at Palmetto Island State park one time. Fished a bit at mouth of Boston and Four Mile canal. Don't know what the hell i'm doing but still enjoying time with my kid.

Been to cove and weeks bay caught a few specks with a buddy that knows what he's doing.

I understand Reds can be had in the canals/cuts off the Boston and Intracoastal but i'm afraid to go off the main path cause i don't know my way around and don't know depths i know some are very shallow. Have GPS but no depth sounder yet (gonna get one). Don't wanna get lost or stuck with my kid.

I'd love to hook up with someone that can show some areas in the Boston and how to find Reds. My boat is 18' fiberglass ski/fish combo so i can do Verm Bay on calm days, would like to learn Redfish point and Fearman or any places off the Intracoastal. I hear Shark Bayou is an option as well.

If anyone knows of a good charter/guide in the area im interested in doing that but seems like there aren't may in our area.

Thanks

Good for you taking your kid fishing. I live in Youngsville too, moved there last year. I fished Fearman Lake a good bit last year and usually caught redfish no problem. If the tide was high just start fishing at the mouth of it and hug the marsh to the left and keep on. I like to throw finger mullet under a cork for them, but if you can get some live cocahoe minnows that is the ticket. Fish it a foot or two under the cork and throw near the grass. If tide starts falling, get back out to the mouth and fish there. You can fish on the bottom there and catch reds, tons of croaker, and catfish also if you just want something to pull your line.
There is another place called Little Bay with some manmade structures that hold redfish and flounder also. If you skunk on any of that, get some dead shrimp and tie up to a tree or anchor down in the Intracoastal and fish on the bottom for blue cat.
BUT, if you really really want to catch some fish, trailer on over to Big Lake, I have not even been back to V Bay since I fished Big Lake last year.

One more thing, if you just want to catch, then think seriously about just putting in on the Vermilion River and fish a nightcrawler on the botttom. Lots of catfish in there

Thanks for the info and you bring up another confusing topic, bait! It seems live/dead bait is the way to go for Redfish. But some have told me you can catch them on lures. The myriad of lures is dizzying. spoons, buzz. but i heard you can catch them on curly tail soft plastics.
seems not much live bait around here unless you can catch it yourself. Stop 92 in youngsville has some i think they have minnows but i'm not sure what kind. I've read use "fresh shrimp", what's that. Like go down to albertsons and buy shrimp from the butcher? or from back of bubba's truck on side of road? Where do you get mullet?

You also mentioned tides. How can you tell if tide is falling other than looking online before you depart. It seems Weeks Bay and cyp point have different tides which i find odd i figure they would be about the same. Also what tide would fearman lake area follow, southwest pass?

i hear that inside fearman lake is pretty shallow can you fish in there.

what about Little White Lake and Shell Island just south of ICY?

Thanks again.

Meet a few guys on this site and they will show you the ropes. Once you start to catch with artificial baits you will be hooked. It's a blast to fool the fish. I meet a guy about 4 years ago named Ob. Aka Jedi lure trick. He showed me the ropes and now that's about all I use. If you ever want to come down to bl and fish I don't mind taking you out on the lake. Hell I will bring my son as well. Btw I think artificial baits produce bigger fish.
