I've been hearing good things about the Bad Boy. 27HP with a 60 inch cut I believe is right in your price range. Just my .02.

I have a Bad Boy bought from Tractor Supply. 48" with a 27hp Briggs, all welded deck heavy duty! Have been very pleased with it. The only mover in a 48" that has that big of a motor, everything else I looked at in a 48" had 20-22hp. Started to go with the 60" but cutting 3 aces that's just a couple more passes to make plus the 48" I can get into some tighter spots around the house.

The only downside to Hustler that I can find is that their decks don't seem to clean out as well as some other mowers. I would steer clear of Husqvarna and Toro as their decks are stamped and will eventually crack. Most of your popular brands are welded decks.
That being said, I bought a 48" Scag 2 years ago and have had no problems with it. It has a 26 hp Briggs on it and I paid right at $5k for it. Really, all of your upper end manufactures run neck and neck on quality and durability, IMO. |

I mail ordered my new Gravley 48", paid $50 for lift gate truck delivery and still saved $750 over my local dealer. NO TAX either. Got it 2.5 years ago from Wise Equipment sales out of Illinois.

I think the commercial Toro is welded also. Exmark makes a good machine also if there is a dealer near by and I have never fooled with the machines with suspension but just remember thats more crap to break and as it wears it may create problems with cut quality. If you have a few dealers near by that sell more then one brand each ask to talk to a mechanic and ask which ones they work on most and look around the shop to see which brands are in for repair, another thing to look at is lawn crews and the brands they use.

I have been having a ferris now for about 12 yrs. Cut grass commercially with it for the first half of its lifetime, now just cutting my own personal 1 acre yard. Cosmetically, its not the purdiest thing, but it still runs and cuts great. suspension is nice too! My neighbor just bought a bad boy ( I think) from a place in abbevile. They supposedly have a unit built by ferris with a different name, but made for homeowners, and I think it is the bad boy. Very nice unit. Our church has a 72" ferris with a 36hp. cat diesel on it. Bad to the Bone.

I bought an electric start Toro walk behind this year to use at the house. Don't know why I didn't get an electric start years ago. Hope it holds up.

i have a snapper and hustler. the hustler by far is a better machine. we cut 6 acres with it. they are built very well and comfortable ride. i think for what you pay they are great. the snapper has been a great mower also, but i prefer the hustler. just had more maintenance with the snapper. the deck, pullies, belt.
