Default GPS Question

I am probably going to be going to Colorado this fall with a buddy of mine elk hunting. I was told it would be easier if I brought a handheld GPS with me. I looked on cabelas, basspro, etc and found all different brands. Would like to spend no more than $350, but want a reliable one thats weatherproof. I have always been a Garmin man, have 3 of the e-trex's, but want something with maps. Any thoughts, links ?? Open for all suggestions.

I like Motion X too but if I was going on an elk hunt I wouldn't trust just that. You can get a good handheld for under $200. I have a Lowrance H20 wife got me for Christmas few years back. Mine isn't color screen though, I would go with color screen for sure if I was getting a new one.

I will just go to academy or somewhere and get a regular handheld one.

U might think about dem hills. My gpx old but good works but dem hills made it hard to get signals some time. I would question the phone one big time. I stayed ne'er Nederland and boy phone survice was spotty reel bad .

So unless u hunting on flat ground not likely u might talk to a elk hunter up there to see what is in use .
I heard of one that keeps u and other hunters using it marked so no shots ne'er them. It's hard sometime to glass in da clouds.
Good luck an if u get a liver I will be ur slave for a day if I can have it.

Edit...
Also at 10000 foot 100 yards feels like a mile.

I have been up the elk hunt in the SW part of the state. I was up around 10000 feet. No phone service at all. I would highly recommed a good gps. Also print some topo maps and carry a compess. Also carry someting to lite a fire. Where are you hunting at?

Good recommendation......I have been hiking in Colorado and us flat land boys don't do well in the high country.

$300 will get you more than you will ever use in a GPS. I have used a Garmin eTrex for several years and they do everything I need. It comes with topo maps and software where you can plug up your GPS to the computer and make maps with it. I would recommend this one to anyone that is just starting to use one, they are relatively simple to learn and will do more than you will ever need, even has solunar tables to see when the best hunt/fish times are. With a clear signal of the sky which you will likely have elk hunting, the accuracy will be about 10 feet, so more than you will ever need. I was 'forced' to get a new fancy expensive one for work but still use the eTrex for my personal use. I would also recommend the DeLorme unit, I really looked into those and there was a fairly cheap unit that had aerial photos and topo maps with it.

Topo maps are gonna be a big advantage where you are going also, not so much in Louisiana, but will help you navigate the easiest routes in the mountains. Just remember that when those lines on the topo are close together it = steep terrain!
