Growing up without a father, my biggest fear is that my kids may one day have to do the same. It is hard to not get choked up when you read this.
Guys please be careful out there, I do not want to ever read about loosing one of our members. |

man i hate to read and hear of these tragedies. To answer the question of what i would have done differently...and this is something that is talked about every time we hear of this: boat sinking and motor problems...bye bye boat (insurance) hello rig=safe. Another option (should be mandatory) is to keep a satellite phone on you & epirb.
My prayers sent to this gentleman and his family/friends! |

I guess if you're already at a rig when your boat starts sinking you should never leave it

Yeah, that's one good lesson here. Another lesson I'm taking from this is not to go out with a boat or motor that is less than completely trustworthy. Hypothermia and/or dehydration are also big concerns in a stranded situation. Don't just dress for the expected trip, dress for the contingency plan if there's a disaster. I like lots of wool layers if it's cold, they keep the insulating power when wet. I also always bring about 5 times the water that we could possibly drink for the planned trip. Extra gas too.

This is a very sad story and a serious wake up call.
My Father and I have been enjoying offshore fishing since we bought a boat 3 years ago. Every summer we get a little more confident and go offshore a little further. This summer we are planning on hitting some rigs around 50 miles out. We frequently discuss a stranded situation and as of now our plan is radio and cell phone for a mayday call. This story confirms that those two are not sufficient. I will be purchasing an EPERB before snapper season starts. Any other extra precautions that anyone takes? |
