Offshore work

Guys my little brother is wanting to get a job with BP or a couple of other offshore companies... He has a passion for some reason to go and work on a rig... Was wondering if any of you work off shore and could give some advice on where he needs to start... He graduates this month and has been begging me to ask some of my fishing friends... One of my buddies works for BP 2 weeks on 2 weeks off and he has started asking him about BP...

My cousin started out with Blake (a drilling company) working 14/14 right out of H.S., on his days off he went to college. When he finsished school BP came calling for him and he is now a company many for them. He makes over 150G's a year working half the year. He's mostly on the drilling end of things punches holes for natural gas.

If I was your little brother I would take this route.

Ive spent my whole oilfield career on land....If he wants to work on a rig it wont be for the petroleum companies...hell have to start out roustabout'en for someone like Transocean, KCA Deutag, Noble..etc, then get his foot in the door after years of experience with the majors of the petroleum companies....Once he gets out on a rig there is endless paths to take to make a career in the oilfield.

that is very good advice if he would be interested in going to school for a petroleum engineer while working on a rig, once he would graduate school he could get a very good paying job with just about anyone he would want. I have had floorhands work for me do this and move on to engineering and make some big$$$.

Do him a favor, tell him to go to college!! I think anyone who works in the oilfield should be required to roustabout or roughneck before doing anything else. We get guys who come work on production end who don't know what work is.

as some of the others said. unless he has some specialized degree, it is unlikely that he will walk straight on to one of the oil companies without any experience. he will have to start at the bottom like the rest of us but once hes in there are many different paths he can take. there is plenty of work and opportunity out there for someone willing to earn it. moved into the subsea dept myself a few months ago. tough to get into but if you're good enough and get some time under your belt the choices are endless right now

I know quite a few colleges offer a 7&7 program for Petroleum Technologies. If he is looking to start working now and wants a degree, this would be a good solution. My older brother did this while working for Haliburton. After receiving his Bacholers he was hired by Chevron as a company man. He is now a self employed drilling consultant. My little brother is in the program now. Only problem is finding a 7&7 and being able to muscle no free time for a few years..

Forgot to mention my little brother is actually working in a resturant until he finishes school

with the cost of transportation many compies now only offer 14 and 14.......you can get on with some smaller companies that do 7 and 7 on lnad rigs but they few and far between. My babysitters husband works 7/7 with Tetra.
