Default The new pup!

Me and my buddy just got back with his new black lab pup. Pretty excited as we are training it together and we hunt together. He took a chance with this one. She was free because he owner could not afford to feed them anymore and she was the last one. Very playful and extremely friendly so far. Here is the only picture I have of her so far, will be posting more later

Anyways, this is new to both of us so any tips would be great! Such as when to start basic training such as sit and all, where we could get DVDs to help or who to talk to. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Will be posting updates throughout her training as well

Nice lookin pup, enjoy the puppy phase it doesn't last long. A good DVD and book especially for beginners is Smartworks by Evan Graham, check out his videos on YouTube. You can start his puppy program now. If you don't care for that, try Bill Hillman's Training a Retriever Puppy, Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training, or Rick Stawski's Fowl Dawgs. A Retriever Club is also a wealth of knowledge. Good luck and enjoy it.

Good looking pup. Been thinking of getting another one. I lost my long time big yella male back in March and my chocolate is getting old. Have fun with him.

Sorry to hear that.
I've been trying to convince my parents for about 3 months now and they won't break so my friend got this one today and it's going to be "ours" pretty much just stay at his house as I will be doing most of the training because he has two a days for football for a while. I will be getting my own next year and they will hunt together

I 2nd the mike Larry total retriever training, it's about $150 but it's money we'll spent. Enjoy ur puppy days and make it all about fun for a while. The time will come soon enough for it to get serious. Remeber pick a program early and stick with it. Raymond on this site has been a big help to my cousin and I. Best wishes and good luck. Please do yourself a favor a get the pup eic tested in the early stages.

Kepp it fun as a puppy and don't try doing too much to fast. Last thing you want to do is burn up the lil fellows desire to retrieve. It gets serious around 6-7 months when the dog loses his baby teeth. Keep all marks easy to find.

The more time you spend with the pup. The more she will be attached to you. The better she will listen to you. I have trained several dogs over the years and that has worked the best.

Got a question guys, introducing remmy to water today. Would it be alright in a pool or would you recommend a pond?

I usually introduce them to water by letting them walk into it themselves. Like on the edge of a pond so he can slowly gain confidence by walking on a couple of inches instead of straight learning how to swim.

Some labs won't get in a pool because they can see the bottom. Just a guess. Mine just cannonballs right on in. I'm surrounded by rice fields and she helps herself to that too. But over the years, I have seen them refuse to get in a pool.
