Just a stab at it but to me, it would tide and duration. A 1.1ft tide over 3 hours is strong but a tide of 1.1ft over 8~10 hours wouldn't be strong at all.
Sounds like you would be looking to see what the current is. |

In the Lake Pontchartrain estuary, I would think something between .8 and 1.2' would be ideal. That would depend greatly on other factors...such as wind speed and direction. Down in Delacroix, I never wanted anything over 1.5'....outgoing, preferably.

As was said, velocity of the water is a way bigger factor as far as how you must fish the conditions. The fish will be there, you just have to figure out how to get the right bait near the fish.
I have fished where it take a 1/2 oz [and a little bigger would have been better] jig head to get the bait down to the bottom to catch some Reds. The same is true for catching crabs. I stopped at a cut where the water was pouring out of the marsh. I took my crab bait and threw it up into the cut. In about 5 seconds the bait would be 20+ feet out into the bayou with a nice big crab holding on like a water skier while I pulled them back to the boat. I caught ~ 15 big crabs there. |

A good rule of thumb for me is to stick to the more open bodies of water during strong tidal movements and go to the deeper passes like rigolets, chef, etc.during neap tides. But that being said I've done great at the passes on strong tides but usually at or near the switch, the big girls turn on at the tide change you can take that to the bank!

When you cannot hold position with a trolling motor and a anchor it is to much. Ran into this a couple weeks ago. All it really did was convince me I needed a bigger trolling motor. Replaced a 55 thurst with a 101 so I hope this is not a problem in the future.
