Hwy 27 south. West side of lake. Just north of west cove. Shrimping is allowed when reserve is open but cannot be near the weirs in a boat. Weirs are regulated and only open a couple days. Just follow the crowd, always 50 people there crabbing, shrimping, fishing, drinking, and trashing the place. I seen people there 2 hours before sunrise just waiting to get a spot to sit. Good luck.

You cannot cast from land because of the mess and piles of dead fish that people leave on the docks. They have had to have the fire dept come out there and hose off the nasty, fly and maggot ridden docks because the trasy people can't follow the rules and throw der fish back in the water. Sooooooooo, you trash it up and you reap what you sow!

I stand corrected...
.but I .was told a story bout a fight dat broke out amongst the upper crust of patrons and bucketeers from dat area who frequent such hog place

..da castnetters were trowing and filling buckets and lines had formed behind each gentlemen. however some gents decided to call pals and give a cut in da line when dey finished which did not bode well wif dose othrer fellas in line..story goes dat a very large fight broke out..dey say along racial lines..

da big sherriff had to come and so on and so forth
..perhaps pure hearsay ....and /or fabricated fable...
.but it was told to me by a very important fella who had annoited himslf acting deputy sherrif-in-fact for dat day and was instructing everyone whithin earshot on rules..and his connection with a pal who was a real deputy sherriff..who he would call post haste if u did not heed his instructions;

Never heard that story but if it is true it is not the reason why casting from land was outlawed!

I stopped by Hog Island area and another spot back when they reopened the Refuge after repairs were completed from Rita.

The trash and dead bait was very bad. Flys were everywhere and it really smelled bad. I really wish I had taken some pictures but I did not.

I was not supprised [I expected it to happen] when the Refuge was closed again the next week because of the way the folks had abused the place.

Because of this problem.....cast netting is now only allowed while you are in a boat.
