Good luck to your son getting a co op position. They are pretty competitive so he either needs a high gpa or you need to be able to pull strings. They are usually offered in the summer and at a pretty good pay. I made 26 dollars an hour during my internship my last semester of college. Some work around your school schedule, some are full time requiring the semester off. But in my opinion, if there is a choice between taking a semester off to co op full time or decline and just go to school, I would opt for going to school

My son is a sophomore at McNeese with 38 hours completed. He has done this while holding 2 jobs. He is involved with the Newman club youth group, He has a 3.91 GPA after 3 semesters. His declared major is Mechanical Engineering, although he is open to learning about other areas of engineering and keeping his options open before he has to commit to a specific path.
Mainly want to know if anyone knows when the co-op will be offered -- spring or summer? Also, what do the CO-OP students do while at the plant. Also want to know that if it requires a semester off, and delaying graduation, is it worth the time and experience. As far as help getting him one of the 6 positions, of course I would welcome some help but would prefer him getting it on his own merits. However, we all know that knowing someone who will vouch for you always is nice. Thanks, Guys! |

Sounds like he has an impressive resume already. Tell him to talk to his dean for the info and attend the career fair if it hasnt already passed. Also, register on the career services link for mcneese, they will send email notifications for upcoming positions.
As far as missing a semester, in my experience and opinion, it's not worth it. Finding a job with a mechanical engineering degree is not hard at all. And despite what many people say, a co op or internship is not necessary to get a job after graduation. Don't get me wrong, it opens up a lot of doors, but it's not necessary. Also, if he does end up getting something at citgo, they will probably offer him full time after graduation |

Has he considered any other plants besides Citgo because I would imagine several others have some programs like that and he may find one that will put him to work and pay his school.

Shell refineries are always hiring also.
And Shell has a better retirement than Citgo. |
