i would go Optimax if you are going Merc... Their 4 strokes have been less than impressive. If you want a 4 stroke get a Suzuki, Yamaha, or Honda

Would love to get Suzuki. I used them for the last 30 years. Only going with mercury because that's the only option for Nitro. Going to go with the Opti max pro.

So Tonka. You like your 4 stroke? I'm scared of it because even a couple of mercury dealers told me to say away from them.

Yeah man, I love my Verado. I spoke to some of the guys on here about it before I got it. I got mixed reviews as well. They had some issues with the earlier models but they seem to have it sorted. Everyone on here loves to hate on the Mercs but let me tell you, I've had 5 Mercs and they all did right by me. This Verado my first 4 stroke, but so far she is dependable, smooth, and very responsive. Now, the Optimax is a great engine as well. Talk to a reputable mechanic and he'll give you the in's and out's of all the engines out there. There are some other threads on here about 4 strokes. Have a look and you will see, It's like ford, chevy, and dodge kinda thing. Best of luck to ya.

I had a Z7 with the 150hp Optimax. Ran great and didn't burn much fuel. I was running a 24 pitch tempest with a 10" atlas jack hydraulic jack plate and with two people full of fuel and gear I could still get 62mph and cruised at 45mph turning about 42rpms. Smooth riding boat. Never had any problems out of the Opti.

Yea, the Merc 4 strokes are not "proven", this is the early 2000's prototype. It is a 40hp, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, 61 cubic inch, EFI, with a 60hp ecu. It has been run hard since 2002, 11 years, 6249rpm everywhere it goes. Does not burn a drop of oil, but, it is kinda slow with a fishing prop on it. Give me another 10 years with it and I'll tell you if it's a decent unit.
