In all fairness you did say anything would do as you were getting desperate.

I think it's fair to say that worldwide the yamaha 2 stroke 50's, 70's & 90's are the most common motors around.... by far.... you would be hard pressed to find anything but a yamaha in most places other than the US.

I chose to power my boat with a 50 yamaha for exactly that reason. You don't get to have the most of something worldwide unless its rock solid in multiple areas. They are a proven motor, with a rock solid track record, that can be fully maintained in the field with minimal tools.

As i think montauk's saying... any motor can go up.... but when you look at the overall picture..... those late model yamaha 2 strokes were as close to bullet proof as you could get.. at least that's my opinion and hope.

What are some things to watch for on those... I'm up to cleaning my own carbs, pulling & replacing plugs, and impeller and thermostat.

do the oil injection units ever go south? anything in particular with the 50 yamaha 2 strokes to keep an eye on?

Like you said those yamahas are damn near bullet proof. Everything you mentioned is about the only thing you can do as far as up keep. The oil injection is mechanical and of course it can fail. Yamaha has a much better track record vs. Mercury with oil injection. I always add oil to the gas even with oil injection. It will smoke more and plugs won't last as long but that is a cheap price to pay.

Oil injection on yamahas are the top of the line. Way less problems with Yamaha oil inject compared to mercury.

I'm itching to find out exactly what went south with mine.
My main reason for wanting mercury, is to do a little work to it.

If I had to guess what happen it would be water in the fuel. I actually blew a 1989 pro 50 yamaha from water in the fuel. Same thing happen, number 3 piston.

That's all I ran through this motor was non ethonol.. Good call on putting you a separator in.
Ryan there's a guy who buys blown up motors for parts. How would you put a price on it?

You can still get water in the fuel with non ethanol....if the gas stations do not keep up with their filters. I would not sell it for any less than 1500.

Yep....if I had the extra cash I would buy it. If the block still good, that is key. I have seen them sell for 800 with a bad block.

I had a 1985 Yamaha 40 that was used hard in fresh(Atchafalaya Basin) and salt(Verm Bay, Rockefeller, Cocodrie) with no major problems. Bought a new(used) boat and gave the boat, motor, and trailer to my son-in-law who still uses it to this day Almost 30 years old and still cranks on the first turn of the key. Bullet proof!

Well that's an up scale. Either drop 1200 and fix it or sell it lol. Not sure what to do. Got to get my truck back out the shop before I do anything

My neighbor lost his 50 Yamaha to a bad upper main bearing. Shop said it wasn't worth fixing. He kept the lower unit and tilt/trim. He set the rest of it on the road and it disappeared before nightfall.
