![]() By BEN EVANS, Associated Press Writer Ben Evans, Associated Press Writer – Fri Nov 13, 2:22 pm ET WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is backing off a plan to ban raw oysters from the Gulf of Mexico during warm weather. The FDA acted after meeting with fierce resistance from the oyster industry and Gulf Coast lawmakers. Instead, the agency told lawmakers Friday it will put the proposal on hold while it studies ways to make consumption of raw oysters more safe, according to several lawmakers. Critics said the plan could have killed a $500 million industry and thousands of jobs. The ban would have prohibited sales of raw oysters from the Gulf for much of the year unless the shellfish were treated to destroy bacteria that kills about 15 people per year. The way I understand it would of been in effect during the summer months. How many of eat them raw in the summer? |

I eat raw oysters in the summer, so far so good. But not as much a fall/winter time.
I will not eat raw pasturized oysters, they are very milky and saltless. |

I heard about this yesterday while hanging out with the Jurisich brothers at the dock. I walked up and said, "Caco See?" They said I was the first Taco they saw in Texas that wasn't on a plate
![]() This is great news. They would have made them treat all oysters, even if COOKED! IF you want something screwed up, give the feds a chance and it will happen. |

"Caco See?" means "How are you?" in Croatian. The usual response is, "Taco", which means "Ok." Hence the nickname for Croatians in La. They're called, "Tacos". Some think it's deragatory, but I don't take it that way at all. Turns out one of them even knows my dad. Not something you expect to see at a dock in Texas.

Even in the R months, the oyster fishermen are still regulated by the state.
After the last big rains we had, they were shut down due to high water levels. I think it is the year round oyster farming on the East side of the state that they are talking about. |
