Default BL 3/30

Took my boss and another co-worker on their first Louisiana saltwater experience. Launched at the intercoastal around 9 and headed to Black Lake thinking the wind would be calmer and the water cleaner. It was, but the fish were apparently elsewhere. We picked up two small black drum in there chunking frozen shrimp on jig heads, and I picked up one rat red on a gulp swim mullet under a popping cork.

Figured if they were going to catch anything best bet would be jetties. So we headed down the rive and moved outside the first cut on the west side. There was already a boat set up on the shore side of the cut so we moved to the gulf side. Started soaking cut mullet. Not sure if there was something different about our bait than theirs but they were pulling in fish after fish while we just watched. We eventually hooked up on a couple and my boss managed to land one at 39 inches and around 19 lbs. Biggest red I'd seen caught from my boat and his first and biggest red ever.

Departed there around 5 for the trek back up the river. Long day on the water for 4 fish in the boat and we all got a little too much sun. But it was fun! All fish were CPRed.

Well, both of these guys are not from around here (I'm a transplant too for that matter), and both just love being outdoors. I'm due for a promotion (and raise) in May anyway which comes with about a $1000 per month increase so I'm happy with that.

Both were adamant that they were happy just getting their lines wet and I take solace in reading that no one else seemed to have faired much better (except the other boat fishing the jetties which I swore must have landed 6 - 10 while we were there; I lost count).

Already planning my next trip.

They had the tide coming in on them is why they were catching and you were not.. you have to be on the side the tide is moving at you

To be clear, both boats were outside the jetties (both on west side). The other boat was between the shore and the cut (by maybe 25 yards) while I set up between the cut and the open sea about the same distance from the cut.

W, are you saying next time to be on the shore side if it's an incoming tide, but on the gulf side if it's outgoing?

I will tell you the tide was absolutely ripping in the whole time we were there. I was surprised because I figured with the amount of rain we'd received from the storms that the river would be flowing out, but it was actually a little nerve-wracking maneuvering through the cut because of how fast the water was moving. If it hadn't been moving so hard I might have actually set up on the inside of the jetties to catch any fish that were lying in ambush but I think it was too dangerous for that.
