Eek Big, Nasty, World Record

Well we just got the line-class world record gar back from steve german's taxidermy and it looks nasty! er, um.. awesome!.
"Big Nasty" as we affectionatly call it, is a certified line class record holding fish and it's credentials are being framed so they can be displayed with the mount. the gar was caught by steve cross in the intercoastal canal, in august of last year.
this beast was caught using a shimano convergence rod with a shimano 200e7, spooled up with 15# big game! yeah 15# big game!! . steve and his buddy robert prejean were fishing for trout with live mullet. he was actually using a zoom horny toad hook with the screw-lock when he hooked the giant fish. unreal, huh? after a nearly 4 hour fight.. the fish and the record was steve's.
Big Nasty is on permenant display now, so y'all feel free to stop in the tackle box in sulphur to get an up-close look at this special giant.

Default Mouf full a teeth

Man that's a beast,
As many monster gar as we see in the pits along La1 i figured that a 75 lb fish wouldn't even rank. But i guess that not that many are landed on rod an reel. Makes me wonder where the one i caught would rank.
Never even thought to weigh or measure.

no leader, they were trout fishing with live mullet. 15# big game mono tied directly to a zoom horney toad hook.. (i couldnt make this crap up!) hooked it in the nose. steve told me that the line just above the hook was ok... but the line from about 2 inches above the hook was gnarled all to h*ll for about 5 feet.. he was as suprised as anyone that the line held.

Wow! nice catch. Mr. Steve did a great job. I'll bet she looks better dead than she did alive. She looks like more than 74.5 lbs. Good catch!

I have caught Gar that big, but it was with a 3/4" pipe with a union on the end.
Not on mono line of any size. Dat thing musta been a fight on light tackle.
I saw a kid fighting something in the canal behind the weirs a few months ago,
he pulled anchor and let the fish pull the boat around for about 30 minutes, then
the line broke. No one on any of the boats ever saw what it was.

yeah man, you should hear these guys tell the story of this epic battle between man and beast lol .. it's really great.. from the motor's pull-start rope breaking, to the 'co-angler' jumping out of the boat to keep it from drifting into crab pots. it's a really good story with a great ending. the american press did an article when it was caught, it's being framed to displayed with the certifications.

Yea, that's why I removed the post. I'll have to find the correct link. A pic of the fish and my buddy was in LSM last month. He just got the call last week that the fish was certified as a line class record.
