FlagUS 1939-1943 America

These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color.

At least most of these people had jobs. It was hard work. I asked my daddy about the Great Depression. He said he didn't know there was a depression cause they had nothing before, during or after it. He was born in 1911

Reminds me of the Alabama hit Song of the South."Somebody told us Wall Street fell, we was so poor that we couldn't tell. Daddy got a job with the TVA, bought a washing machine and a Chev-ro-let, singing song, song of south, sweet potato pie and hush my mouth". My parents were both born in the mid 20's so they got to see the Great Depression firsthand. They were so frugal with their money it was unreal. They could not understand how kids (me) could squander so much money on fishing, hunting ,scuba diving and such. I have no regrets although I wish I could manage money like they did...
