There were several oil pump recalls, depending on the serial number on the engine. Yamaha has a service bulletin out that says if you have a HPDI 2-Stroke with one of the following oil pumps you need to get it replaced. Have someone that knows about yamaha's do a compression test on all cylinders as well as a visual inspection for any heat related issues.
-oil pumps with s/n 60v10, 60v11, or 60v12 will need to be replaced with s/n 60v13 -oil pumps with s/n 60v0, 60v01, or 60v02 will need to be replaced with s/n 60v03 -oil pumps with s/n 6d000. 6d001, 6d002, or 6d003 will need to be replaced with 6d004 |

series 2 vmax supposed to be ok. Most of the series 1 is considered hit or miss junk. Also depends on what HP you want. Most of the problems came from the 200 or 250. Seems the 150 or 225 were ok for some reason.
What kind of boat you looking to get? |

The Pathfinder im looking at has a 200. The reason im asking Chas is that Brock had two HPDI's and both were bad.

Ha....yeah but he tends to run his stuff pretty hard & seems to have plain bad luck with engines. He also blew his Merc Optimax too.

I have owned a HPDI in the 225 model, which was manufactured in 2004 that I purchased new in the crate in 2006. After just 37 hours on the engine, I lost my #1 cylinder. It was completely rebuilt and after only 16 hours on the engine, I got a call to bring it in. The engines had oil pumps that would not pump enough oil on low/mid-range RPM's. My oil pump was updated, and other than regular service of filters/plugs, it never gave me any hiccup.
I would have no problem buying another one today, especially after what I put that engine through on the 22' Blazer. i didn't abuse it, but it worked it's a$$ off for me for years w/o any other issues. And if I needed to run WOT for an hour boat ride, it seemed to run even better! |

I've read that some owners liked the 2.6 block better than the 3.1

I had the 150 vmax hpdi on my other boat and it was a good motor. The vmax is labeled only for the 20" shafts. From what i have heard they had issues mostly with the 25" shafts 225 - 300. BTW, Yamaha no longer makes those motors and they have done away with the series 1 & 2.

I'm running an 07 225VMAX HPDI with approx. 120 hrs on it with no problems. Although their were problems with earlier models. I sure hope the later models are perfected!

I have a 2005 200 Vmax HPDI 3.3 liter on my 22' Pathfinder (which is for sale) and have had no problems... There was a service notice on certain pumps that didnt apply to my engine... All cylinders were scoped out anyway and were fine...
Its been a good, strong, reliable motor and good on gas as well... Are you looking at the 3.1 (OX66 ?) or the 3.3 big block ??? Thanks, Hydro Last edited by Hydro; 03-10-2011 at 07:54 PM. |

Say what you want podna but the sho is a far superior engine compared to the opti. Its old news the epa is getting stupid with laws. Before long there will be catalytic converters on outboards....opti is history.
