Default No bananas!

Supposed to bad luck to bring a banana on a boat. Anybody ever hear of this and how did it get started?

I have heard it and experienced it. One time I brought a banana on the boat and I ended up fallin in the water in about a foot of water. Landed on my feet but my shoes, socks, and pants got all nasty. Purple Back knows he was there.

Found on the web. There are many theories on why people believe bananas are bad luck for a boat. One superstition is that boats carrying bananas don't catch fish. The origin of this belief dates back to the Caribbean trade of the 1700s. The wooden sailing boats of that time had to move quickly to deliver bananas before they spoiled, and fishermen had a hard time trolling for fish on such fast-moving boats, which is how the superstition came about. Another superstition that originated during that time is that bananas will cause a boat to sink. This belief developed after many boats never made it to their destinations, and all of the doomed boats were carrying bananas.
One of the creepier superstitions is that banana cargo could actually kill a man. In actuality, fermenting bananas do give off methane gas, which could conceivably get trapped below deck and kill any crew members unlucky enough to be working in the hold. Another popular theory was that venomous spiders hitched rides in bananas, and once those bananas were onboard, the boat would be host to any number of lethal critters. And then, of course, there's the theory that banana peels cause crew members to slip and fall on deck [source: Attah].

My uncle's partner in their camp was telling me a story last summer about how he brought a banana on a guide (a woman named Leena I believe) boat on the lake. They were at the weirs and he pulled it out and started eating it. He said she starting flipping out. That was the first I heard of it.

It's suntan lotion, not a banana.

Hope you learned more from Ike than not to take a banana on the boat. You should be preparing yourself for some green trout smackdown!!

I experienced it on a charter trip once. we brought bananas and the captain was like you know thats bad luck right. We were like- Ah!! We dont believe in that. He said well its up to yall. And I'll be dang if we didnt have more things go wrong on that trip than you can imagine. Finally we chunked those bananas as far as we could and everything went smooth after that. I dont really believe in superstition but I will never bring bananas fishing again.

As far as its origin I always heard it was from back in the days of shipping the bananas on boats and spiders would hide in the bunches. then come out on the boat and bite crew members and they would die. therefore bananas being bad luck on a boat
