Either a sun fish I saw at thunderhorse or a damn ribbon fish at the MRGO dam...they are some strange azz fish....don't think the sun fish I saw was 1,000 lbs though I think more like 500-700

Sun fish is the ugliest thing for sure.....yak did you get some pics...I haven't seen one that size!!! Out of 11years in the gulf...I saw 4 sun fish and biggest was about 200lbs... Biggest fish I ever seen was a whale shark at least 35ft long...and I saw a Hammer Head shark from the Helicopter one time that was every bite of 1000lbs plus

Ya I've seen a few hammerheads every bit of 1000 it's unbelievable how large they are next to a boat...that head is sooo wide...biggest fish I've ever seen had to be a tiger shark though at the horseshoe rigs out of Venice it ate a 100 lb YFT like nothing then ate a bonito and stayed hooked for about 2 hours before breaking 20 yards from the boat it was massive capt. Said it may have been a record..

Weirdest fish I have seen is an oysterfish or a ribbon fish. A close second is longcast. :P

Coolest thing I ever witnessed was on A Chevron Platform...in High Island... We just go though proving the LACT meters and we walked over to the hand rail to wait for them to finishing pumping oil down....we were just staring off into the water when a huge school of bait fish surfaced... They had about 9 bull dolphin busting them....and out of the blue came two Marlin...they busted in the bait and stopped...just sat there and took off again in the bait ball...it was so fast but seemed like a day watching them slice that bait up!!....

yeah a spoon bill is an odd one, but there in the sturgeon family not catfish. people catch them while catfishing in the red river. I guess thats why they relate them to catfish.

Let me try to dig up some pictures to post. Being in the ROV business, I've seen some pretty strange stuff, and collect some pics from other guys that I've worked with

Used to work out in the Mississippi Canyon area. Saw sunfish, whale sharks, and marlin. Wierdest was when giant Manta ray pods would swim by. Looked like Klingon warships. Top was dark and bottom was white. They would move by flapping their side fins. Used to see up to a dozen at a time.
