Ginger Ale helps settle the stomach. Dramamine makes me sleepy, so I don't take anything

I always got sea sick on my 27 grady white. I began to eat a dry ham and cheese sandwich and drink a bottle of water before going offshore. Taking bonine or dramamine starting the night before also helps. Stay away from doughnuts and any other sweet foods in the am. ALSO, do not eat a big ole cormie's sausage sandwich either or any other greasy foods.

get your doctor to prescrube you some Zofran. It is used for nausea in cancer patients. I take one the night before bed. One when I get up and then one every 6 hours while on the water. Try not to bend down too much getting bait or unhooking fish, especially in rough seas. There is a new anti-nausea medicine for cancer patients that is a disolvable film, like listerine strips. It is called Zuplenz. It may work good too, just have not had the chance to go offshore or use it. Should work as well as, if not better than, Zofran.

Here's the link to the drug: http://www.zuplenz.com/

Transderm Scope (scopalamine) works too but many people get drowsy or irritable with it.

Zofran is great for nausea, but doesn't really help with motion sickness. It has a different mechanism of action. Phenergan works great for motion sickness but makes you drowsy. Dramamine and scopalamine work great for motion sickness but also make you want to sleep. When AF pilot trainees get motion sickness, we give them scopalamine patches, but they have to take an amphetamine (dextroamphetamine) to counteract the drowsiness. SO, all that said, just take one of the above meds and just realize that it is going to make you tired and pissy.

Good info. doc.

I hear too many people complain about taking dramamine, bonin, .... and saying it makes them sluggish and tired. Get sea sick once, and you will be begging to just be "tired and sluggish".

And to those who do not get sea sick and do not have to take this stuff, ya'll are truly blessed. I love to fish offshore, but it is like gambling every time I go!

When I first started fishing offshore if I would start feeling bad I had a script for attarax. Ask Lucas. Works great.

Now I'm just used to it.

And salty. I would love to see 5-6 foot waves in big lake.

Most people say "it got really bad out there today 3-4 footers easy" but we ran 45 through them"

I automatically know they are lying.

i worked and lived on a crew boat for 3 weeks, servicing an unmanned rig about 80+ miles offshore of cameron. never did get sea sick, until about the 4th day. (keep in mind this is living, eating, and sleeping in 4-6 ft seas-which were the norm ) occasionally we had to go in because of the seas had reached 8-10ft(the swells were touching the handrails on the boat bumper of the rig( where you swing rope over) Half my crew always were sea sick, this half would work on the rig all day and soon as they get on the boat, eat, shower , sleep.(dramamime) It must have been torture for them, the other half of the crew simply fished for snappers , groupers, and sharks the whole time.

I find the worst time for me was at night. Sleeping in 6-8 foot seas ain't no fun, and don't even try sleeping on your side..

sprite also helps settle the stomache, i find if you get jacked up on coffee, it numbs your equilibrium somewhat...lol ...make that caffeinne and niccotine.

I've tried em all. Nothing really works for me. I have inner ear issue because of my allergies. But I just don't take anything anymore. I'd rather take my chances then be drowsy from meds. It's weird. I've been fine in 8 ft seas and sick in 2 ft seas.

weird man.. I've never really known that this many fisherman were affected by sea sickness. I always thought the guys getting sick were newbies and have been on the water very few times.

I've never gotten sick even when I was younger I never had problems in the boat. Ya'll have definitely made me realize that i'm lucky not to get sick.

My dad had some motion sickness pills that he used to take when we started offshore fishing that would work for him. I don't know what they were called but he'd always take them early in the morning. They were small pills. I'll have to ask him, tonight

I've used the Non-Drowsy Dramamine before and it worked great. Not sleepy at all, but if I can't find it, I'll use the regular formula, eat a dry biscuit from the marina deli and drink lots of water and snack while I'm out there (plus a couple beers just to get my head right!!)
