Last time I was down there, my girlfriend was catching em every cast using bits of shrimp in the surf. You couldnt walk without some sort of bait fish or shrimp scattering, of course that was last month.
And dummy me wouldnt use em for bait. ![]() |

Croaker suck on this lake. I have proven this several times to the texans. Texas has grassy bottoms lots of croaker feeding on the grass equals natural food supply for trout. I don't see grass in big lake. Numerous tomes I've seen em not touch croaker. Test urself put three guys in a boat throw mullet shrimp croaker... Mullet shrimp get eaten first croaker still croaking.... And I dint wanna hear any1 say I've banged em on croaker bc yea somedays they feeding like crazy. Croaker is not a dominant food source on this lake throw what they eat... Why waste time looking 4 croaker

I don't fish for limits. I fish for size. Croaker is a great bait at the right time. Large trout and flounder.

Check out hog island gully recreation area. About a week ago the croakers were in there thick (locks were open). They might still be around there. Note: you can only throw a cast net from a boat over there.

As far as a natural predator...a croaker is to a trout what a bluegill is to a bass. There are probably times that you could catch trout on bluegill on Big Lake.

I'll take a live pogie over any live any day of the week. Next it would be mullet. They will eat croaker but I've never seen anyone catch a lot of fish on croaker. I've tried em and pogie and mullet outfish em and I'm talkin big fish too. To each his own but I prefer pogie and candy finger mullets.
