Default Titling a boat and motor

Is it hard to get a title for your boat and motor? My credit union told me that it is a new thing for all 3 boat motor and trailer to have a title for financing a boat purchase from a private seller. Or you need the original invoice from when the boat was purchased from the store. They said it has become a problem that people couldnt technically prove ownership of a boat or motor. Anybody know about this stuff?

I bought one from a guy in TX and had title on all three, call lawdf and ask them about it or a private title company like Tibs Title

Your right. serious pain especially for a trailer didn't know they started titling boats I don't see how they could ask for a receipt when they should have a paper trail all the way to the original owners from the registration on the boat, then the motor I can see that causing a hole new set of pains.

Is the pain getting the paper work done or is just having to wait so long?

All of the above. Gotta have 2 signatures from state and local tax office. Gotta transfer title from previous owner and hope he has all 3 titles, if not then that is where the fun starts. If trailer is used and never titled then almost impossible. Gotta make appointments for state tax office, DMV for trailer is a joke, paperwork for LDWF is like writing a thesis for grad school. It takes time if you have all the paperwork, if you missing any little piece then it sucks. Good luck.

I printed the form off ldwf and it was just one page. Stupid that it is required now for financing a boat.

Don't know your situation but if this is all being done for a boat loan check into personal or signature loan, I did this on my bass boat and the interest wasn't much more and it made things go way smoother since the boat, trailer and motor went into my name instead of having the lender involved and them holding title.... once you get it all in your name if you find something like CSE was doing 1.9% you can then go talk to them about refinancing it.

Took alittle leg work having to get stamps from parish and state tax offices but it wasn't bad, just call a private title company and a local boat dealer ( Lake Area Marine) and ask them for some help... think I got everything from title place that needed filled out

You may want to also ask if this is really required if you are buying the boat from someone in LA, I was told that the only time you were required to go through all that is on new boat or buying out of state.... just a thought

I have had several boats in my day, the only titled item was the boat trailer, you got the vin number off the boat and boat numbers and registered it with the LDWF, only had to change title on trailer through the DMV. This is now not the case?????? I have never seen a title for a boat and motor, wasssssssup?

Its all about money, they remixed that we have been selling boats worth $100-100,000 and only paying taxes on a trailer we deemed worth $100..... this is what I was told by the state and parish tax office

Seems like you should have to title all 3 on new boats, motors and trailers sold after the new law went into effect. How would you even get a title on a used boat, motor prior to the new law?

I would think they have a form that requires registration numbers to prove owner ship to then create a title but I bought a used 17' with a 40hp and trailer about 3 months ago and only paid tax on trailer and this was from someone in LA so this reinforces what I understood of only titleing a boat and motor from out of state...... be nice is someone from one of our sponsors (Boat Dealer) would weigh in their thoughts

I agree, something just isn't making sense to me. I understand big brother wanting his cut, but none of this triple tile crap should apply to used boats before the apparent new law, it should be new boats sold from date of law, imo. I guess you have to hire a damn lawyer to figure it out. LOL

They said the problem is proving ownership of a boat and motor when selling. Weedeater I am assuming you paid cash?

The numbers on the used boat (port and starboard side) have the name rank and serial number of the person registered with the LDWF plus a current registration sticker, the boat ownership can be easily traced, phuk it i'm done, pisses me off.
