IMO...It is a great program and any kid can learn a lot. How good it is depends on the Leadership and the group of children. Like was said already, not for all boys....some like it, some don't.

The Cub scouts and Boy scouts programs are based on learning new skills and how to interact as a group. As the boys learn and demonstrate that they know each new task, they earn a new "Rank" to show that they have advanced there skills. Most of the requirements are fairly simple and can be learned easily.

Most boys find this to be fun.....some don't. Again, good Leadership is important. Parental involvement is also helpful to the boy and to help the scouting program be more successful.

Default Scouts

It's an excellent program, but it takes good adult leaders who are involved and committed. It also takes a fair amount of time to organize and plan field trips and other outings to keep the boys interested. My boys quickly became bored because we would do more adventurous things together that didn’t involve scouting. Such as shooting .22s, fishing and riding 4wheelers. It's easier to manage 2 boys when they are handling weapons and riding 4wheelers than trying to keep track of 20. One thing to keep in mind is that scouting is the only times most of these boys will ever get enjoy the outdoors and other activities. Alot of the boys I mentored came from single parent homes where most of their time was spent around their mother. Overall I think it’s a great program and would allow my boys to join as well as be a scout leader or assistant leader. It was loads of fun. I really enjoyed camping and field trips.

I went all the way through both cub scouts and boy scouts. I really enjpyed it and learned alot. It is a great experience for both the kids and parrents if you want to enjoy it. The only thing is to make sure that you go and check out a couple of troops to find the right one. All of the troops are different, and you need to find the one that fits you best. I am 19 almost 20 and still go to some meetings and some trips when i can escape from college.

I was a cub scout leader in an inner city school for years. Was really hard telling a kid that they couldn't go on a camp out because they didn't have an adult that would go camping w/ them. Son went all the way thru cub scouts and then he discovered girls. Didn't have time for boy scouts. Some of the most fulfilling years of my life were spent teaching those young men.

My son joined this year as a Cub Scout. He seems to really like it. They really teach a lot of good principles like honor, integrity and duty. They play a lot of games that teach them about these principles so the kids are not just sitting there hearing a lecture. The guy that runs the program in Deridder has a lot of energy and is very passionate about the program.
