Default Building a chicken pen/coop :::Help:::

Turning my dog kennel (10'X20') into a chicken pen. Got excess lumber laying around to build coop so that is done. Well not yet, but will work on it in the coming days. First time chicken raiser here. Need brown eggs only. What kinda chickens ya'll got ? Still have to build coop and buy wire to wire the pen in. Its going to be a while, but need ideas first.

Need the following:
Type/breed of chickens
Where did you buy and how much per chicken ?
Pics of your coop for ideas.

Lol. I was posting mine when you where posting on how to build one. Feel free to come by an take a look at mine. Shawn built this one and I got it from him. I bought some chickens from gillis feed which was all hens. I bought the Golden Buff Orpington from J&B Farms in Orange. My uncle lives in Cottonwood. I can find out where they get their chickens from being its probably closer than Orange.

I'm gonna be building one myself pretty soon.... there are more coops listed on this website that you can use for ideas. http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

I would imagine that the key ingredients for down here would be to make sure and line the bottom 2 feet or so with hardware cloth so snakes dont get in there easy.

Tractor supply here in Moss Bluff has a couple kinds of baby chicks. I think the price was $ 3 and 4 each.

My brother lives south of Lake Charles and raises and sells chickens/eggs. He also sometimes buys some from the sale barn in DeQuency.

The Dequincy sale barn has an auction every Friday night. I think it starts at 6 or 7pm. You have to get there early to view the birds before it starts. Baby chicks sale for $0.75 up to $3.00 dollars, just depends how bad people want them that night. Its located on HWY 27 just before you enter Dequincy. I prefer Rhode Island Reds, nice brown eggs and will get broody if allowed. I do not recommend buying fully grown birds. Especially once you have an established group of chickens. I made that mistake once and lost about 20 chickens to an illness that i introduced by buying an older bird and placing it with mine. It did not appear ill. Good Luck

I would have suggested getting hens that were alrady laying. I can buy them for $12-$20 around here. You going to spend double that in feed before they start laying. My wifes cousin knew we had chickens so he gave us 3 hens. I'm about to start on a pen for them. I picked up some damaged horse panels the feed store for $5. So I'm going to use that.
