Got down yesterday to be greeted by brisk winds. After shoring up a few things around the camp, took off down the ship channel and alsmost turned around it was so rough. Gutted it out and by the time I reached the coast it was much better. Thought I would have to grind it out at a dirty water spot, but the SE wind had done its magic and the reef was surrounded by trout green water. A little snotty getting there, but looked great otherwise.
First thing I learned was no trolling motor, so drifted and picked up a nice one on top. Pushed up to the reef and figured then was a good time to try walking on top of it. Got boat situated and found a pile of fish on soft plastic 200 yards down. Long story short I put five nice ones in the the boat (wading and walking back) and finally messed up the spot trying to get it closer to the action. No string, no pliers, plenty aggravation, but fun crossing their eyes in knee deep clean water. Drifted a few more times after that and but four more before it was time to end it.
Got out super early this AM more prepared (but still ill-prepared) for wading. Fish were in the same spot and chewing again. Judging by the overall size today (down) and the cleaning of yesterday's fish today, they had a pretty good spawn last night. Several throwbacks today. Rain showers were popping all around us (got wet three separate times in 2.5 hours). Strung 8 14-18s. Fish were slashing at the bait today and not getting the hooks good. Foul-hooked several on soft plastic and mirrodines today. And pulled several hooks on topwater (I use mono) early.
Lost those fish and made a stop north to an island. Pogies present in good numbers. No topwater knocks, but hung a few quick on sliver mirrodines when the sun was out, then switched to a pink/chart Catch 5 when the rain approached.
A shower passed and I was left with zero wind. Still pogies flipping, but no tide moving and not another bite. Headed to the barn just ahead of the squall line coming from the north. Total of around 20 with some 19s mixed I'm. Too wet for even a table shot.
Good times!
