Default Terrific 6/4 Tuesday two-fer. Dulac and Empire

Much anticipated day on the water as the forecast was ripe for a haul. Turns out to be halfway right and not at all what I expected.

Got on the water in Dulac at 5:15 and headed for Lake Pelto's reefs and islands. Hit the open water with a huge smile as I saw nothing but a slow, gentle and greasy slick swells coming from the southeast and the sun easing through distant cloud cover.

But, also noticed a complete lack of current upon arriving at the early AM topwater spot, but pogies flipping so I held hope. Tried not to think about the obvious not-so-terrific water clarity on the trolling motor prop and began casting on the A spot. Took five casts to get a strike and another toss to garner a strike, though it was a nice 19 incher. Next cast a fat 17 gobbled up a blue moon Bay Chovey, but the next half dozen tosses came up empty and I high-tailed it.

Tide was high at Wine Island at 0300 but no movement. Hit another reef and got a brief pattern going on jigs - stuck and land five nice ones - just off the drop off, but water was again a little off and fish not chewing. Next two spots not even worth mentioning and then back to the semi-productive reef for nothing. Only consolation was that the sun was now out and higher and the water was clear enough to show a trough separating the reef. Filed it away in the notes, hit the first spot for nothing and headed in as time commitments beckoned.

Of course, the tide started moving at 9:30 when it was time to go, but did have time for one more spot in some broken marsh on the edge of the open water. Spied two reds and 5 big black drum in 20 minutes cruising along the oyster beds, so pretty sure that can be added for future fun.

Capt Lloyd Landry and I had been trying to put together an afternoon trip for a while and yesterday was the day. Wind was blowing as we shoved off at around 4, but no issues with the tide this afternoon and we were protected. Lloyd found us some dirty green water and some quality trout left from his charter that morning. The bite came and went and Capt Lloyd humbled me good with his skills - I blame the wind . We totaled around thirty up to three pounds or so before taking the slow ride back to the launch with a sunset to our left.

Glow chartreuse Bayou Chubs on 3/8 oz jigheads did the damage. Turbulent and wind-swept water made this combat fishing. It was truly awesome to the new beach being built by the pump-in river sediment. This is the way we need to be doing it, men. Yeah, it's expensive, but the stark contrast in the beach and riding back through what once was the marsh was mind-blowing.

Add Capt Lloyd to your list of delta guides. Great guy, terrific boat (24 ft Lake and Bay), nice lodge with meal packages and he and his party either won or were right up there in the Oilman's Tourney last week.

Good times!
