Default Info on 40hp

Im in the market for a new 40 to put on a 18x42 tunnel southfork. leaning towards a merc but want to hear about others that would run better with these new 4 strokes.. 1) what upgrades if any can you do, such as 60 carbs or take off restricter plate or whatever and 2) what would difference between short shaft or long shaft be?

I am a merc guy, and I would say the new 40 tohatsus are pretty bad arse. Maybe Top Dawg can chime in, he got a nice set up.

I have the new tohatsu 2 stroke. They're fuel injected and come with elect start and power trim. No carburators. Cranks right up and runs strong. If you are running the marsh the 2 stroke will be lighter and cost less than the 4 stroke. The long shaft you will need if you have a high transom. The short shaft for a short transom. For running the marsh you would probably get best performance out of a 13 pitch prop.

I have a new 40 tohatsu 2 stroke. They are 20lbs lighter, $800 cheaper, and are super quiet compared to older 2 stroke motors almost as quiet as a 4 stroke.

I have a tohatsu as well on my duck boat which is a 2044. It runs 35mph and the fuel injection is great in cold weather. I love it.
