Default Go devil question

I have a 13 hp go de il I just bought. Greased it up today and ran for first time. Ran great but when I got back to dock notice a pile of grease that apparently cMeoutof top of shaft housing. Could the seal be bad? How hard to change if it is bad?

That shaft shouldn't be sealed I know mine is not. Never had any trouble so far.

Maybe I put too much grease. Will just watch it and put a pump or tow every other time.

There should be a couple seals at the top.

Just change the seals. Better safe than sorry. I used to change mine every season. It's not hard just dirty. Worst part is getting the prop off.

I always have grease coming out of mine. More is better than less with grease.

As long as it's not flinging grease at me I roll with it. Mine is a shop made one though.

Read the manual, there are instructions on how to do this. If you have to order new seals, get an extra set to save on the S & H cost.

Like was said, hardest part is to get the prop off. You got to beat on it hard sometimes. Bring it over to my house and I will help you get it off.

But.....like you said, you may have just put too much grease into the shaft. Does your shaft have a "grease pot" sitting on top? This is spring loaded and when it is full, grease will come out of a small hole.

Seals are not hard to change out, just a little messy.

In post #5 of this thread I included a link to owners manual. Seal changing instructions are included in there.

Kibb, will that prop wrench work on a go-devil sd motor? A buddy is having problems taking his off and asked me to throw some heat on it for him this afternoon, but I'm worried about screwing up the prop or the shaft.

I'm not sure. I haven't tried it on one. I believe it would as long as the flatboat fits between the blades. You can also weld two pieces of square stock on to an impact socket. Angle them so the grab the backside of the blades. An impact wrench should get it off. If it's a 3 blade get a big impact socket and cut three notches in it to fit the blades and roll with that.

Here's a link to the homemade 3 blade removal tool.
