![]() I like to go work the reefs also and see where else I can catch fish but have to say I fish the wiers and am proud of it. And from all the boat traffic I see so do alot of people. So what's the big deal. OK bring on the razing |

For me, the contest is with the fish. A lot of fishing is knowing where the fish are and putting your bait in front of them. If I had a bigger boat and didn't mind burning the gas, I'd probably fish the weirs more than I do. I'm not ashamed to say that I am often looking for an easier way to put fish in the boat for myself, my children, and the guests on my boat. Making it harder to catch fish is a valid pursuit for those who enjoy greater challenge. That's just not how I approach it. If it's legal and safe, I'm up for trying it if it might put more fish in the ice chest for less time and effort. |

I believe it is "I gots to get mine" mentality of some folks who fish there. Chill out and be respectful. I don't fish much any more and want to catch when I do go and would prefer to not go to the weirs even if they are stacked...I don't like dealing with people. Especially ones driven by greed over a damn redfish. Just my .2

A lot of people just associate the weirs with dumb fisherman / Anchor chunkers and inconsiderate fellers. It's kinda like the the cove in VB when it's on. They have so many fish if people would be considerate come in on trolling motor and set up correctly everyone could work them over but they don't. They come in on the big motor radio cranked throw the anchor and fish for 10 mins then motor out full clip. Most people get tired of that crap my self included so we just don't mess with them. Now if I catch them right on a weekday and the wife or a friend that doesn't get out much wants to bang the reds and I'm not on them other places I will hit them up but if you can put up with that mess and you love to catch reds more power to you. Nothing wrong with fishing them at all. People just tend to think you can't fish if you have to go there but that's not the case all the time. More times than not you ran over limits of reds on the east bank just to get to the anchor chunking rodeo.

There is plenty of room at the jetties and along the beach to spread out even if lots of folks are fishing. We found out best spot at the jetties (close to the cut) one time when boats were stacked up favoring the hole closer to the end. Even Turner's Bay has plenty of room to spread out and has never seemed crowded compared to the weirs. Grand Isle is just a dream when it comes to being able to find fish while maintaining a comfortable fishing distance. One key to our success that I don't mention much is putting the boat in a spot where all directions are pretty good and likely to produce. Setting up at the weirs makes one casting direction too highly favored. I like spots where casting the bait away from structure is as likely to produce as casting bait toward structure and casting into deeper water is as likely as casting into shallower water. We routinely cover a radius of 100-200 feet in all directions from the boat. If one area or bait is working, we might give it a bit more emphasis. |

BINGO.. I very rarely ever fish at any weirs unless there is ZERO boats there....and fishing really sucks and im running around, I will stop and try for pot luck "I NEVER EVER GO THERE 1st with my customers because" 1st Reason I don't want them to see how people disrespect people 2nd I don't want to lost my cool with anyone so its best to stay away 95% of the time when people are catching redfish at weirs I can catch them at will many other places with ZERO boats in site and its more fun with customers not having to watch lines and getting in anyone's way Most people who go to the weirs are people who fish very little and only know that spot, so I rather give them that spot and go find fish else where. I can only recall two times I ever stopped by a weir with customers and tried and caught zero both times I have been fishing before with buddies and pulled up to the weirs and caught 60 trout many times but no one ever knew that trout were there at the time and no one was ever fishing it but maybe a few of the real knowledgeable guides

Yes I have seen the people who can be disrespectful and when packed I just go away. But I have seen time people stay back and switch when they hit limits. I bring a lot of guest and my kids like it there so we fish there. But I agree it can get crazy sometimes but most times people are pretty nice.

It really doesn't matter as long as you are enjoying yourself. Fact is that most of us do it for enjoyment and if you really just 'need' the fish, you would come out WAY cheaper just going to the grocery store and buying trout or redfish in the end ![]() |
