Default Secret Big Lake Bait

I don't know why many people aren't trying this, but I have a great luck in Big Lake throwing the Alabama Rig. The best techniques I found is to real it in fast to trigger re-action bites and trolling it over the reefs and my favorite under the birds catch multiple fish at a time. If the water is real clear its not as successful.

the trouble with that rig is the sheer weight it can have.

its not something easily casted and it will grab onto oysters like an octopus so its best trolled like you were doing.

I see it as a trolling bait only because even if you use 1/8 oz heads on plastic swim baits your talking 4 or 5 baits and a weight of a full 1 1/2 oz plus trying to cast (3 oz plus for 1/4 oz heads) so you need stout gear for it which doesn't lend itself to be easy to fish by casting and can be quite a workout after 20 or so casts.

I have tried a daisy chain style triple rig and found good success with it but I don't think I could add more weight then that and fish it comfortably by casting, but that's just me

I can tell u why I'm not trying it,
#1 reason I use very light equipment and light line

You have to have a heavy rod plus #30 line...

And with 15 trout limit, I enjoy catching then one at a time

I have a rod and reel designated to throw the a-rig once the fishing gets better. Always wanted to try it for trout and this year will be the year.

its fun to catch bass on. I got into some whitebass one time and caught 3 at once, pretty cool. Pain in butt to throw tho

Tried it and it doesn't work. Trout need space in between baits for them to bite them. Same reason double rigs spaced at least twenty inches from top to bottom bait are much, much, much more effective than those only spaced 12 inches apart.

Besides that the thing is a PIA to throw and retrieve. And big rods and line are no fun.

I like to throw it and have done well on it. I have hooked up 5 reds at the same time all about 23 inches. Not much fight more like reeling in a 5 gallon bucket. They were all fighting against one another. Trout are hit and miss on it for me. Reds love it, then what does a red not like.

Throwing one is all about the right rod and reel. Well more the rod. Altering your casting still like you are throwing a big swimbait also helps with the casting. More of a body cast than arms.

lol

I once saw two Vietnamese pull up by the surf near the opening out by whisky pass using live crawfish, we were catching a few trout there and laughed at them until after a few minutes they started bringing in huge reds and all manner of other fish from trout to flounders.

just goes to show you never know what bait will work best on any given day.
