i used to run a 15/42 semi-v alweld with a yammy forty in sabine, it would do about 44 or so with my duck huntin gear.... it would eat the 25's.
then had a 15 marsh runner we ran with a mega 25 with 50 carbs, etc.... it had a 50 inch bottom but even with a load still ran a good 40+ they were getting 85 horsepower out of some of the 40 mercs but it was hard to find a hull that would use all the power without pounding you to death. |

I had a 20/36 Weldcraft with a 40 Merc. 3 cylinder for duck and alligator hunting.
It would run around 35 mph. But it was propped for carrying a load, not for speed. I carried 3 men, hunting stuff and a big lab to the blind and had to take off in shallow water. I also carried heavy loads for alligator season, in shallow water. It had a tunnel hull with a skeg in it for weeds. I never fished out of it, just hunted and sometimes when crabbing in the marshes behind Cameron. Hurricane Rita damaged her, I got her fixed up and Ike made her vanish. I never seen her again after Ike. |

Ray, do you think those long skinny 20ft boats perform better than a wider 17, or 18ft in the shallow H20? |

i dont think they made 60 carbs for those, he may have it at 60 HP
Lake area marine sold the 40's for a long time with mega stickers and fake serial number tags.... the game wardens in lacassine would pull the cowling and check your carbs tho.... ![]() |

B-Stealth, the wider bottomed boats prolly got up on plane faster, but when I was looking for a longer boat, that is all I could find. I bought it in the early 90's.
And I wanted a commercial rated boat. It had a thicker hull, more floatation and more ribs. Plus the transom was braced a little stronger. It had 2 braces between the ribs and the top of the transom. The bad things about it was it didn't have a big casting deck and it was narrow. But at 20 ft., it had plenty of room. |

correct me if i am wrong but i think the 20 foot length boats would get up shallower b/c they don't squat as bad jumpin on plane as a 15 or 16 footer. plus with the tunnel the transoms are taller, but it robbed speed..
now with mud motor tech where it is they have taken over...... |

From what I have noticed a longer boat the same width will get up quicker(actually wont squat as much) but a shorter wider boat will squat less than a longer skinny boat. and a longer skinny boat that has enough horsepower to lift the bow will be faster than a shorter wide boat because less drag in the water.

La I defiantly agree with you on the 15 or 16 footers, not enought length to displace the weight of the engine.
But would a wider 18 ft perform better than a skinny 20 fter. Not speed here just holeshot and shallow water performance. |

I have two, first one is a 1448 Weld Craft with a 2004 40 merc with 60hp carbs and a 15p ss prop.Boat runs 52 with just me in it.(I even pull out the plywood floor to run that fast),it runs 48 with me and a buddy. My other boat is 1752 Allweld with a 70hp Yamaha with 90 carbs. It sits on a homemade jackplate and the boat has a tunnel welded in.If it can float it will get on plane, takes about 4 in of water! That boat only runs 45.I need to add a tach and play with some props.
