Some years there has been chunks of ice floation down the Mississippi river in Baton Rouge.
I use to be involved a little with barge traffic going up the Mississippi. Usually sometime in mid-November the upper river closes to all barge traffic. This is due to low water as you go up past about St. Louis, MO. The river is not reopened until the ice [as seen in the pictures] starts to melt or float away. Those barges in the picture may not move for 6 more weeks. When the ice "dam" breaks.....we get a rise down south. |

I see I was wondering what would happen, I know the Corp is expecting a very high water this year. Will this make it worse or will it remain pretty much the same? I would expect a sudden influx of water as soon as the "dam" breaks. This could be bad if the river is already very high to begin with. Correct? |

A few years back the Ohio river had some record flooding for a week. But by the time all that water got into the Mississippi river, the "crest" started coming down the river and slowly started falling by the time the crest was half way to the Gulf. We did not see any flooding in LA. that year. If the mid west area gets a warm spell to melt the snow on the ground, that water could runoff and be gone before the main ice breaks free. |
