Reel Selection - A Deeper Look
When reading about the opinions on reels, I don't put a whole lot if faith in the subjective replies like "casts a mile", "lasts way longer", "those are trash". All if those talking points are very much dependent on many outside factors.
For the most part, manufacturers will have very comparable products in each of the price ranges. When I'm looking to buy, one of the main things I look at is where my money is going. I know most, if not all reels except Ardent(?), are made overseas. Whatever. What's hard to find is who owns Shimano, Abu, Lew's, etc... Can you guys that have been around it a lot fill me in on the innards of these companies? Right now I like Lew's because they are gulf coast bread. Lew's - Gulf Coast (helping southern employees, but were they bought out?) Shimano - Cali (no thanks, I'll support another state's citizens) Abu - Iowa (ehhh, not bad) What else can you add or clarify?

I've always used Shimano and still do. Got a Lews awhile back and love it too. Thinking about getting the inshore Lews too. I would also love to hear more about internals.

Most of the lews, bass pro, abu, pinnacle, etc have interchangeable parts and are not made anywhere near the tolerances of shimano or daiwa. Shimano and daiwas will outlast anything made by pure fishing or its sister companies in china.

Everyone so far has given the same responses as every other forum and review... Subjective.
Where's my money going???? Where's yours going??? What part of the country or the world is being stimulated? I've thrown Shimano, and prefer my Lew's. I have two Abus, and prefer my Lew's. Longevity? Well, how do you care for them? I see guys riding down the road with 30' of crap stacked in a truck and a piece of twine holding it, if never make it out of the driveway... Maybe you can dog your stuff and call it the best, it's still an opinion and won't work for everyone. So, where are these places based? Who owns them? Who's involved? What organizations are they involved with that help or hurt us? How do they alone with our political stances? Slap me some data down that says Shimano is best, and not just sales numbers. If you buy because everyone else says they are number one, good for you - I prefer to make my own decisions.

But my bucks go to what last for me..........I haven't "Had" to buy a reel in years

Most reels you buy you are supporting China.
These are marketing companies and most reel sales are in the United States Lews - Its former reel buyer for basspro and his location is in Springfield, MO. Has nothing to do with South Alabama and been like that for years. Yes hate to bust your bubble shimano made the Lews speed spool for Lews. Lews name has been thrown around like red headed step child. Originally Lews owner died and name was then sold to Ryobi, Browning, Zebco, Basspro bought the name, and finally present owner. Purefishing - money goes to up North (Abu, Penn, Shakesphere, and Pflueger) Quantum and Zebco - I believe is now owned by W.C. Bradley Co. out of Columbus, GA. http://www.wcbradley.com/divisions.aspx Pinnacle-http://www.pinnaclefishing.com/shop/t-contact.aspx which is silstar they make a lot of store brand reels and us operations is based out of Irvine, CA. Now Daiwa and Shimano reel companies that have a long track record of being in the reel business, keeping parts on hand, having real repair dept, and better customer support. These companies also sell reels in the Japanese markets which that market is real demanding for quality made products. Daiwa and Shimano also sell reels worldwide and in 10 years lets see who owns Purefishing (use to be K2 sports back in 2006 Pflueger, Penn, Abu Garcia, Shakesphere), Lews (which marketing company will buy that name and will you have parts support), Zebco/Quantum/Fin-nor, Pinnacle. I have Daiwa and Shimano reels still in service that are older than present marketing company owning the above reel names. Look at JDM (Japanese reels) you don't see a lot of other companies in this real angler picky market. You do have some but not a lot of Abu but not big like Daiwa or Shimano http://japantackle.com/ Daiwa- http://www.daiwa.com/Contact/ out of California I like their black gold spinning reels and I got some over 20 years old. I can still get parts for that line of reel Their fame Black gold reel, magnetic brakes, and sealine reels Shimano-http://fish.shimano.com/ Been around along time and they actually made the original lews reel for Lews reel. They actually took the design and made the tools, quality control, and after the relationship ended made a similar reel under the bantam name. Been around along time, fairly good service, parts support, and known for quality worldwide.
