White Cheeks smackdown
Made the trip back to Kansas last week. We left Christmas night at 9:00, and arrived at camp at 9:30 . We were beat up after that haul, but got our second wind and hit the roads scouting. Going into one of our gates, a guy stopped to visit and ask if we are seeing much. He was from Iowa visiting inlaws with his wife. Real nice kid, and die hard waterfowler. He had a trailer load of fullbodies and did we. Hunted with him that evening on his ground, and managed 9 Canada's and 1 snow. Made another hunt with him the next day, and got 2 Canada's. Wind was South, and temps in the high 20's. He had to head back home, so me and my partner hit the roads again scouting. A good front was closing in on us, so we knew the pattern was gonna change. Pulled up on my spot, which is half cut corn and beans.....and there they were ! about 1000 Canada's on the Beans ! We moved our spread from the Corn that we hunted the first day where we just killed 5 Mallards.....BTW my first shot was a banded Drake. We were stoked! Anyway, we moved everything and went back to camp for a sandwich. Arrived back at the field at 3:00, climbed in our layouts, and it was ON ! It was 19 degrees with a 20 mph N wind, and they were focused on one thing.......fill there bellys ! Had our 2 limits by 4:15, and one had jewelry. Mallard was 17 years old, and the Goose 13.....he was a beast pushing 15 pounds. Great trip with a great friend and got another friend to boot ! We all are already planning another trip together. Tomball Tiger missed an epic hunt, and I doubt he will pass on the next trip .

One tough cat in short sleeves in 20 deg weather. I would love to make a greater Canadian hunt, I've only killed lessers

Thats awesome! I was in Kansas the 26th-29th chasing ducks. About 15 miles SW of Hutchinson. It was my first trip up there and was a huge let down... Went with a buddy who doesn't really duck hunt but goes every year deer hunting. He had always told me stories of all the greenheads up there. Turned out all of our landowners properties were frozen solid and he didn't have any access to dry ag fields. On the last day we found some birds on a tiny creek no more than 10 yards wide and killed 10. Glad to hear someone picked up my slack!

That was my first " do it your self" Canada Hunt. Usually go to a friends place in Nebraska, but they have been slow the last couple of weeks.
We Bow Hunt our place in Sept and Nov. and most of our group do not Waterfowl Hunt. After seeing all the Birds there in Nov., I had to go back and give it a try. There were 1000's of Mallards in my Corn 3 weeks ago, but very few last week. Most all of the water around was froze up as you say, except for one hole that was about 1/2 mile from my fields. The Geese stacked up in there every day, and went out to feed strong on Sunday when it got so cold. |
